Performing solo Thursday Sept. 23:

Sean Meehan

Drummer Sean Meehan is regarded one of the most prominent improvisers and interpreters of contemporary composition for percussion. He has toured North America, Japan and Korea performing solo and in improvisational configurations with various local artists ranging from musicians to machines to avant-garde flower arrangers.

At home in New York City, Meehan has performed in the city's finest venues. Meehan has received 4 consecutive awards from the New York State Council on the Arts, and his 1997 performance with Edwin Torres was considered one of the year's best in the Village Voice Year in Review issue.

"Sean placed a small, inverted cymbal on his snare drum, and started hitting it at an even rhythm. He held the cymbal in place with one finger of his other hand. The cymbal began to rotate. The continuous whine of the cymbal and rhythmic clanging as he hit it were hypnotic. Then he varied the pressure on the cymbal to create other rhythms..."
